Stay Ahead of 2021 CPT Code Changes with Online Tools

The American Medical Association (AMA) has released the 2021 Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) code changes1 and the time has arrived for providers to start making modifications to their patient accounting system data dictionaries, chargemasters (CDMs) and charge capture tools.

According to the AMA 2021 Appendix B, there is a total of 322 CPT code changes for 2021. The good news is although the AMA published 322 CPT code changes, 129 of those changes published were already published earlier this year.

Here is a summary of code changes by category distribution:

  • Surgery (26%)
  • Category II (22%)
  • Pathology/Lab (22%)
  • Medicine (15%)
  • E/M (10%)
  • Radiology (5%)

As your hospital or health care organization prepares for CMS’ 2021 price transparency regulations and medical coding updates, it should be verified that all CPT codes are up-to-date as this is crucial to ensure unnecessary costs aren’t being incurred.

In an age where remote workforces have become a new normal due to COVID-19, and access to coding paper books has presented its challenges, a web-based, billing and reimbursement reference platform is key to stay ahead of coding changes. Consider the following.

Can your hospital or health care organization:

  • Proactively access medical coding updates on a quarterly basis?
  • Easily determine and identify code changes for all categories and service lines?
  • Access AMA/AHA/Dr Z./Optum interactive electronic coding references when working remotely?
  • Reduce the burden of content updates on your IT staff?
  • Avoid billing delays?

If you answered “No” or “I Don’t Know” to any of these questions, it may be time to explore knowledge engines to help improve compliance, revenue performance and business processes.

For the last 25 years, nThrive’s KnowledgeSource platform has provided coding and compliance updates to over 300,000 users across the entire revenue cycle continuum and helps healthcare providers manage overlapping regulatory priorities and navigate complex coding, billing and reimbursement requirements.
