The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is driving the charge to value by developing various programs to optimize health system performance by reforming how health care is both delivered and paid.

Physicians are operating in a health care industry that is moving away from volume and productivity and moving to a value-based care model. However, physician behavior can sometimes still focus on the fee-for-service mindset. Incentives can help to change this physician behavior.

For these incentives to work in a value-based world, an individual practice will need a sufficient percentage by volume of patients or revenue. Additional incentives around the total cost of care, quality and access are necessary between the payer and provider organization.
