On January 30, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019- nCoV) disease outbreak a public health emergency of international concern. As a result of the declaration, new medical coding guidelines have been established by WHO, AMA and CMS. These include two new HCPCS (U0001 and U0002), a CPT code (87635), and an ICD-10-CM code (U07.1). The HCPCS and CPT codes go into effect April 1, 2020 for dates of service on or after February 4, 2020. While the ICD-10-CM code was initially scheduled to go into effect October 1, 2020, that date has also been moved up to April 1, 2020.
